For the past 3 years, Senior Associate, Bec Dahl has been an announcer on JOY94.9.
JOY is Australia’s only GLGBTI radio station, and is committed to providing a voice for diverse communities, enabling freedom of expression, the breaking down of isolation and the celebration of the community’s culture, achievements and pride.
JOY prides itself on having Melbourne’s most uplifting music mix, as well as a broad range of specialty programming.
Bec appears regularly on two programs – Family Matters, and Chicks Talking Footy.
Family Matters airs every Thursday at 7pm. It is a program that aims to entertain, inform and celebrate existing, expecting and prospective LGBTQI parents.
Bec is also one of the co-hosts of the multi award winning Chicks Talking Footy, which airs every Wednesday night at 7pm. In 2017, the show won 3 awards – the Community Broadcasting Associate of Australia award for ‘Excellence in Sports Broadcasting’, the Adam Stobbs Award for Broadcasting Excellence, and the JOY94.9 Best Specialist program.
The show, which is hosted by Bec and a group of other AFL-mad women, communicates AFL in a way that is accessible and enjoyable whether or not you are a footy fan. The program is always informing and it empowers women to be active participants in football. In addition, The program showcases and celebrates queer people in sport both on and off the ground.
Bec and the team have broadcasted live from both Etihad Stadium and the SCG during the AFL’s Pride Games over the last 3 years, as well as from the inaugural AFLW Pride Game in 2018.
In 2017, Bec was nominated for the GLOBE Award for ‘Straight Ally of the Year’ to recognise her work to support and promote the LGBTI community and ensure that it is recognised and strong
